This item is based on the goddess Freya's neclace Brísingamen from Norse Mythology. Old Norse brísingr, being a poetic term for "fire" or "amber" is mentioned many times in the old sources as one of the most prized possessions of the gods.

Amber was a precious and very popular material for jewelry during the viking age going all the way back to the bronze age. These can be found extensively in many of the archeological museums in Scandinavia. However, most of the amber in the world has historically come from the Baltic countries where the largest deposits still are today. These amber beads are from Lithuania, which was one of the largest trading partners of the Vikings!

Additionally, This necklace also functions as what is known as "Mala Beads" from Eastern spirituality. Mala beads are used for meditation. Instead of counting repetitive chants, the beads are for passing through your fingers each time a verse is recited so you can disappear into the trance. These come in 108 beads, just like some of the Scandinavian amber necklaces consist of as well. 108 being 12x9- a sacred number in the Norse beliefs also.
